Position Summary

Under direct supervision the Accountant I is responsible for performing general ledger and related accounting functions for multiple funds, enterprises, and departments owned or administered by the Washoe Tribe. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Business Administration, accounting, or other related field and two years of experience in general ledger accounting with a governmental entity or for multiple companies owned by one organization, or two years as an Accountant Entry Level; or a combination of education and experience.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California or Nevada driver’s license or capable of obtaining one within thirty-days (30) of employment.

  • Must be able to be insurable by the Tribe’s Driving Policy.

  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background

  • investigation.

  • Preference will be given to Qualified Native American Indians.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Prepares accurate financial reports to departments and agencies within and outside of the Washoe Tribe.

  • Develops and maintains working relationships with Program Managers and Directors of assigned funds, enterprises or departments.

  • Prepares account analysis of specific accounts.

  • Prepares bank reconciliation.

  • Assists accounting clerks in daily maintenance of accounts receivable, accounts payable, payroll, purchase orders, encumbrances and check requests.

  • Prepares accurate monthly financial reports.

  • Schedules and prepares financial reports required by funding agencies.

  • Acts as departmental supervisor in the absence of the Finance Director.

  • Uses MIP accounting software and Microsoft Office software to maintain the general ledger and related journals in accurate and timely order.

  • Compiles reports showing statistics of receipts, expenditures, accounts payable and receivable, profit and loss, fund balance and other items pertinent to business or administration operations.

  • Reviews and approves purchase order requests and check requests.

  • Reviews receiving reports and matches to purchase orders in order to close/complete purchase order or process partial payment.

  • Prepares and executes reimbursement requests and draw requests.

  • Applies Washoe Tribal Policies and Procedures consistently when approving or authorizing transactions.

  • Reconciles bank statements, credit card reports, general ledger accounts and other data, accurately tying detailed information to ledger totals.

  • Creates and generates spreadsheets as required.

  • Prepares and sends monthly, quarterly and yearly financial reports.

  • Assists with fixed assets as needed.

  • Assists in supply inventory and ordering.

  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by: conducting research; attending seminars, educational workshops, classes and conferences; reviewing professional publications; establishing networks; participating in professional societies; and conferring with representatives of contracting agencies and related organizations.

  • Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Physical Demands
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee occasionally is required to stand; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
