Position Summary

Under direct supervision the Controller manages and directs the accounting functions of the Washoe Tribe. Hires, trains, develops, and supervises accounting staff. Oversees financial reporting and compliance. Manages the annual audit and insures adequate internal controls. May act as departmental supervisor in the absence of the Chief Financial Office. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, major in accounting, or other field of business, with an emphasis in accounting and five (5) years of experience in general ledger accounting either with a governmental entity or for multiple companies owned by one organization; or three years of service as an Accountant or one year as Accounting Manager for the Washoe Tribe; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California or Nevada driver’s license or capable of obtaining one within thirty-days (30) of employment.

  • Must be able to be insurable by the Tribe’s Driving Policy.

  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation.

  • Preference will be given to Qualified Native American Indians.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Maintains the general ledger, accounts receivable, accounts payable and payroll journals in accurate and timely order using Excel, MIP fund accounting software and import/export routines.

  • Schedules and supervises professional accounting staff; insures that reporting deadlines are met and that the books and records are maintained on a current and accurate basis in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Governmental Accounting Standards.

  • Manages the annual budget process; coordinates with program directors and managers and provides reports, analysis, decision tools and information for use by the Washoe Tribal Council to make informed decisions.

  • Fosters professional development of accounting staff and insures that collaborative relationships are maintained between accountants and program clients, resulting in informed users of financial information and effective budgeting for operational efficiency.

  • Maintains professional and technical knowledge by: conducting research; attending seminars, educational workshops, classes and conferences; reviewing professional publications; establishing networks; participating in professional societies; and conferring with representatives of contracting agencies and related organizations.

  • Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Physical Demands
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee occasionally is required to stand; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.
