Position Summary

Under direct supervision, the Dental Assistant II performs a variety of dental assisting, clerical, and housekeeping functions that aid the dental department in providing quality dental services to the Washoe Tribal Health Center’s patients. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Valid certification in Dental Radiology or Dental Assisting from an accredited dental assisting program and three years of experience as a Dental Assistant in any dental office and must have current CPR certification.

  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Performs a number of clinical support activities involving a variety of sequential steps and processes.

  • Completes coronal polishing on patients.

  • Packs subgingival cord.

  • Fabricates temporary crowns and bridges.

  • Applies fluoride varnishes.

  • Performs individual assignments as assigned by the dentist, including intra-oral procedures.

  • Performs recurring clinic maintenance, laboratory radiograph and data entry duties.

  • Receives and routes patients.

  • Schedules appointments as required. Records information related to medical history of patients.

  • Examines charts and treatment information as relayed by the Dentist. Relays Dentist’s instruction to patients for post-treatment care, as well as motivates and instructs patients in home care and disease prevention techniques.

  • Maintains dental equipment in a clean, sterilized and operative condition. Stores and maintains adequate levels of supplies.

  • Responsible for the set-up of instruments for dental procedures and accurately recording the treatment rendered in patient records.

  • Provides chair side assistance during all routine dental procedures.

  • Performs preliminary impressions for study models, removes sutures, and places and removes rubber dams.

  • Exposes, processes, and mounts, intra and extra-oral radiographs.

  • Applies topical fluoride solutions and/or desensitizing agents to the teeth

  • Pours and trims models from impressions, and constructs custom impression trays.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment. Knowledge of business English, proper spelling, grammar, punctuation, and basic arithmetic.

  • Knowledge of records management and basic accounting procedures. Knowledge of dental office procedure and dental record keeping.

  • Knowledge of principles and methods of sterilization of dental equipment, instruments, and supplies.

  • Knowledge of uses of common dental instruments, equipment and material.

  • Knowledge of dental hygiene and prophylaxis.

  • Knowledge of dental X-Ray techniques.

  • Knowledge of nomenclature and terminology of dentistry.

  • Ability to keep dental records.

  • Ability to take, develop and mount dental X-Rays.

  • Ability to prepare and clean dental instruments, equipment and accessories.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.

  • Ability to represent the organization in a professional manner, building respect and confidence.

  • Ability to maintain confidentiality.

  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and meet deadlines. Ability to carry out instructions furnished in verbal or written format.

  • Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Word, Excel, Access, and presentation software (such as PowerPoint).

Physical Demands
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee occasionally is required to stand; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

Work Environment
  • Work is generally performed in an office setting with a moderate noise level.
