Position Summary

Under direct supervision the Janitor/Building Maintenance Worker II performs assigned janitorial/custodial work inside and outside of Washoe Tribe Meeks Bay buildings and facilities including, but not limited to building maintenance, painting and overall general repairs. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High School Diploma or GED and two years janitorial or maintenance experience.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California or Nevada driver’s license or capable of obtaining one within thirty-days (30) of employment.

  • Must be able to be insurable by the Tribe’s Driving Policy.

  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation.

  • Preference will be given to Qualified Native American Indians.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Sweeps, mops, scrubs, and waxes floors.

  • Dusts and polishes furniture; cleans offices.

  • Washes windows, walls, and mirrors.

  • Cleans, sanitizes, and deodorizes restrooms; replaces soap and paper products.

  • Unclogs lavatories.

  • Empties and cleans waste receptacles and ashtrays.

  • Disposes of trash appropriately.

  • Vacuums and shampoos carpets.

  • Strips, waxes, and buffs floors.

  • Cleans vents and light fixtures.

  • Replaces light bulbs.

  • Assists in moving office furniture.

  • Maintains equipment and custodial supplies and replenishes as needed.

  • Cuts weeds, rakes leaves, and removes litter from grounds.

  • Maintains entrances, steps, walkways, and parking lots.

  • Cleans snow and ice from parking lots, walkways, entrances, and steps.

  • Trims and prunes trees and bushes at ten feet and below.

  • Performs painting and minor maintenance and repairs.

  • Sets up tables and chairs in various meeting rooms as requested.

  • Adjusts heating, lighting, sound systems, and water valves in buildings as requested.

  • Attends and participates in meetings and planning sessions.

  • Informs supervisor of any defects or repairs needed in buildings or on grounds.

  • Observes safety rules and maintains a safe environment.

  • Assists in ordering supplies.

  • Assists in training new employees as needed.

  • Contributes to a team effort and accomplishes related results as required.

  • Performs other duties as required.

  • Knowledge of traditional form of government and tribal customs and traditions.

  • Knowledge of occupational hazards and applicable safety practices.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.

  • Ability to safely operate motor vehicles and other equipment to transport furniture, tools and supplies to offices in various locations.

  • Ability to safely use cleaning products and safely operate cleaning equipment.

  • Ability to learn the methods of cleaning and caring for buildings, grounds, and equipment.

Physical Demands
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; and reach with hands and arms. Work is generally performed both indoors and outdoors at various work sites. Situations where safety-toe shoes, safety goggles, gloves, protective face shields, or hardhats are needed may arise. Prolonged standing and walking may be on uneven surfaces or unstable ground; and climbing ladders to perform maintenance and janitorial tasks may occur. The employee frequently is required to stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl; and talk or hear. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. The employee must frequently drive motor vehicles to perform duties at off site locations or to transport equipment, supplies and materials, and travel on public highways and rural roads are required.

Work Environment
  • Work is performed both indoors and outdoors. Exposure to natural weather conditions, various dusts and mists, and normal debris and hazards common at construction sites may occur while performing outdoor duties. Evening, weekend, and/or holiday work is rarely required.
