Position Summary

Under direct supervision the Language Teacher is responsible for instructing all participants in the language skills of the Washoe Tribe. Organizes and develops the curriculum to be presented in the classroom. Coordinates involvement of each participant’s progress and maintains accurate records. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Must be a fluent Washoe Speaker and know the culture.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California or Nevada driver’s license or capable of obtaining one within thirty-days (30) of employment.

  • Must be able to be insurable by the Tribe’s Driving Policy.

  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Participates in all phases of the Language School program.

  • Creates, implements and actively participates in all activities and curriculum that meet the social, emotional, physical and intellectual needs of the language participants.

  • Maintains accurate reports and timely records of all participations and progress

  • Works closely with staff and Washoe families establishing positive and productive relationships.

  • Organizes planning to meet the special needs of all language.

  • Develops lesson plans and instructional materials and provides individualized and small group instruction.

  • Uses varied learning environment to present subject matter related to Washoe language participant in classes.

  • Establishes and maintains standards for participants behavior needed to achieve a functional learning atmosphere in the language classes.

  • Prepares administers and corrects tests and records results.

  • Evaluates participants levels of learning, keeps appropriate records and prepares progress reports.

  • Communicates with participants through personal contact and meeting means to discuss students’ progress and interpret the school program.

  • Maintains order in the language classes.

  • Keeps attendance, grade records and participants assessment documentation.

  • Selects and requisitions books and instructional aids; maintains required inventory records.

  • Participates in curriculum development programs and implements the same.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Physical Demands
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee occasionally is required to stand; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl.

Work Environment
  • Work is generally performed in a classroom setting with a moderate noise level.
