Position Summary

MTAIIs are seasoned professional medical assistant support staff with the training, professional development, and compliance monitoring of the Washoe Tribal Health Center (WTHC) and satellites. Under direct supervision, the MTAII provides simple and complex care to all patients in accordance with the accepted standards of approved care. This care includes consulting with Registered Nurses and/or Medical Clinicians on patient problems, identifying uncertainty in methods of procedure, and reporting to supervisors all incidents that might affect patients, personnel, or visitors adversely. MTAIIs are enthusiastic leaders that accept responsibility for duties autonomously. Maintaining the confidentiality of all privileged information. This position is located in Gardnerville, NV at WTHC's main campus.
Minimum Qualifications
  • High school diploma or GED with minimum of 10 years of continuous experience as a clinically active CMA/RMA.

  • Phlebotomy certification by a recognized body or provide other documentation of venipuncture competence within six months of placement.

  • Completion of an accredited Medical Assistant program with documented current status as a Certified or Registered Medical Assistant (CMA/RMA).

  • Possess or obtain within 90 days of hire “Laboratory Assistant” licensure from the State of Nevada DHHS Division of Public and Behavioral Health Bureau of Health Care Quality and Compliance.

  • Must have Basic Life Support (BLS) or ability to obtain within thirty (30) days of hire.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • The MTAII is readily responsible for all functions of the MTAI, assisting the medical team to provide comprehensive medical/telemedicine services and as a backup for all support functions.

  • Is responsible for the general training in best practices and professional development of MTAI including those staff, students, or volunteers with no formal training.

  • Will ensure formal mentorship of guidance on the selection and enrollment into educational programs, certifications, and any related academic pursuit.

  • Participates in WTHC meetings and disseminates relevant information as directed.

  • Participates in meeting Strategic Plan and Tribal Health goals asneeded.

  • Trains staff to and personally participates in Telemedicine Conference Calls and assists all medical staff with the execution of clinical orders, lab orders, and any other forms requiring processing.

  • Serves as liaison between patients and medical staff for any questions regarding the plan of care, including telemedicine appointments, and provides clarification when necessary.

  • Trains staff to and personally performs patient screening and triage in coordination with a designated clinician.

  • Trains staff to and personally obtains patient health history and updates electronic health records as directed.

  • Trains staff to and personally monitors and record/s patient's height, weight, and vital signs; records chronic medications (including strength and dosing schedule) as directed, and records reason for the visit.

  • Trains staff to and personally performs concise and thorough documentation in patient charts.

  • Trains staff to and personally verifies the data entry into all WTHC systems (lab values, scheduling, etc.) to ensure the accuracy of the clinical record and workflow of the clinic.

  • Trains staff to and personally ensures the good order and cleanliness of all clinical areas, i.e. in the laboratory, exam rooms, central supply, and Nurse’s station.

  • Trains staff to and personally administers medications orally and by injection including routine vaccinations, under the clinician’s written order.

  • Trains staff to and personally enters immunization data into the Web-Based Immunization Information System (WEBIZ) registry and assist in the recall system.

  • Trains staff to and personally call patients with normal lab/test results, or abnormal results per written clinician instruction.

  • Trains staff to and personally call or fax in refill prescriptions as directed by clinician.

  • Trains staff to and personally assist in receiving and stocking medications, medication samples, and supplies.

  • Trains staff to and personally autoclaves and maintains sterile surgical instruments and supplies.

  • Trains staff to and personally schedule patients for transportation.

  • Trains staff to and personally assist with the re-scheduling and notification of patients when a clinic is canceled or rescheduled

  • Trains staff to and personally give follow-up phone calls for no-call or no-show patients.

  • Trains staff to and personally assist providers with paperwork outside of the clinic as well as paperwork related to referrals (i.e. consultations, home health, physical therapy, etc.).

  • Trains staff to and personally guides and instructs patients in self-care activities i.e. personal hygiene, nutrition, family planning, and grooming needs.

  • Trains staff to and personally sets up and operates specialized equipment for care of patients (i.e., electrocardiogram (EKG), suction, inhalation therapy, spirometry, etc.).

  • Assists physician/clinical nurse in the application of life-saving techniques in emergency cases.

  • Trains staff to and personally applies dressings and bandages as directed, removes sutures; charts pertinent notes according to standards; gives a variety of irrigations under the direction of the clinical nurse.

  • Trains staff to and personally collects and prepares lab specimens i.e. blood, urine, stool, sputum, etc.

  • Trains staff to and personally draws blood, performs procedures for laboratory tests and EKGs, and makes referrals to other care providers as needed.

  • Trains staff to and personally perform finger sticks, skin tests, throat swabs, and ear lavage under the supervision of the clinician.

  • Trains staff to and personally maintains daily testing documentation in appropriate paper and electronic health record logs.

  • Trains staff to and personally executes lab technician functions and serves as a backup in the lab on an as-needed basis.

  • Trains staff to and personally provides health screening and health education for groups and individuals as indicated and assists in organizing and implementing immunization programs.

  • Trains staff to and personally maintains inventory in the laboratory, supply rooms, and patient exam rooms.

  • Maintains up-to-date professional knowledge and proficiency.

  • Performs other duties as required.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications
  • Knowledge of modern office practices, procedures, and equipment.

  • Knowledge experience and proficiency in electronic medical record systems (EHR).

  • Knowledge of human body anatomy and physiology, sterile techniques and procedures, how to meet, deal and work with medical, surgical, and psychiatric patients,

  • Knowledge of modern principles, methods, and procedures of nursing care, including medications, treatments, patient hygiene, and bedside care.

  • Knowledge of current medical terminology.

  • Knowledge of isolation, aseptic and sterile techniques.

  • Knowledge of the functions and structure of the Washoe Tribe.

  • Ability to lift, stand, and assist patients when transporting, or assist patients in wheelchairs, walkers, or other mobility aids.

  • Ability to administer prescribed medications and treatments.

  • Ability to take vital signs.

  • Ability to maintain accurate patient records.

  • Ability to understand and follow technical written and oral instructions.

  • Ability to respond effectively to emergency situations.

  • Ability to learn to effectively operate specialized medical equipment.

  • Ability to work effectively with physicians, registered nurses, and other health professionals.

Physical Demands
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit and stand; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms, and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee occasionally is required to operate a motor vehicle; stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.

Work Environment
  • Work is generally performed in a clinical setting with a moderate noise level.

  • Positions may require floating to another clinic or service line.
