Position Summary

Under direct supervision of the Education Director, the Pre-College Advisor provides support and guidance to students and their families to set higher education and postsecondary goals; researches and provides information on admission, assessment, registration, program, and financial aid for higher educational options including but not limited to Native American and Tribal Scholarships; has knowledge of and follows the Federal Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA). Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Education or related field; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California or Nevada driver’s license or capable of obtaining one within thirty-days (30) of employment.

  • Must be able to be insurable by the Tribe’s Driving Policy.

  • Must be able to successfully pass a pre-employment drug/alcohol screen and background investigation.

  • Preference will be given to Qualified Native American Indians.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Guides students to define and develop realistic higher education career plans throughout high school and assists during selection and registration of college track classes.

  • Meets with, advises, and presents students and their parents with higher education, vocational, and postsecondary options.

  • Provides outreach and guidance to area youth and their parents at assigned schools on interest inventories, preparations for test taking (ASVAB, SAT, ACT, etc.) application completion, scheduling, reading test results, vocational or postsecondary education, and financial aid including completion of the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA), scholarships, or grant applications.

  • Collaborates with the Higher Education Coordinator to participate in community functions, the Washoe Tribe Youth Conference, the Career and College Fair, college and vocational school tours, WA-Pai-Shone program, and other essential events to provide information and resources.

  • Researches and collects Native American Scholarship, college, vocational, and postsecondary information and attends meetings on any new programs that students can benefit from.

  • Coordinates advising meetings, presentations, and talking circles with parents and guardians.

  • Other duties as assigned.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications

Physical Demands
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly is required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to walk. The employee occasionally is required to stand; and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds.
