Position Summary

Under direct supervision, the Safety Coordinator coordinates with multi-disciplinary teams to develop safety initiatives through education, assessments, and policies that will maintain a safe environment while meeting regulatory and accreditation compliance. The role is responsible for creating and maintaining a safe environment for staff, patients, and visitors. This is accomplished through the writing and implementation of plans, policies, assessments, monitoring, and evaluation of findings, data collection, and compliance. Maintains confidentiality of all privileged information.
Minimum Qualifications
  • Associate degree in a healthcare discipline and three years of healthcare safety experience or equivalent combination of education and experience.

  • Must have and maintain current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification or ability to obtain within 30 days of hire.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities
  • Ensure that staff and patients of Washoe Tribal Health have access to and are familiar with appropriate safety policies and procedures.

  • Develop, implement, and evaluate safety programs to comply with Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care (AAAHC) safety-related standards.

  • Coordinate and Chair the Safety Committee.

  • Conduct routine safety audits, drills, and mock codes.

  • Carry out safety training programs for staff regularly.

  • Collaborate with various supervisors and staff to conduct Quality Improvement activities.

  • Investigate accidents and develop processes for the collection and analysis of data regarding their cause.

  • Implement initiatives to reduce the level of work-related accidents and/or occupational hazards.

  • Direct and supervise general safety guidelines, policies, and procedures.

  • Inspect and/or monitor the daily operations to make sure they follow safety policies and regulations.

  • Collaborate with departments and staff to confirm that all necessary training is accomplished.

  • Reports to Tribal Health leadership team regarding safety adjustments and suggested recommendations that may be required within the organization.

  • Coordinate with outside vendors to regularly inspect equipment and machinery to ensure all are operating safely and to manufacturer specifications. Address findings as needed.

  • Performs all other duties as assigned or required.

Knowledge, Abilities, Skills, and Certifications
  • Knowledge of the functions and structure of the Washoe Tribe.

  • Familiarity with Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), AAAHC standards, and other related regulations pertaining to healthcare and general safety.

  • Adaptable to a variety of situations, change management, and new learnings.

  • Ability to analyze data involving many variables and convert to actionable information.

  • Ability to communicate effectively in the English language both verbally and in writing.

  • Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds and with co-workers at all levels.

  • Ability to multi-task, pay attention to detail, have strong organization skills, and be a team player.

  • Ability to travel between practice locations.

  • Ability to represent the organization professionally, building respect and confidence.

  • Skill in operating business computers and office machines, including in a Windows environment, specifically Microsoft 365 (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, and Teams).

  • Skill with Electronic Health Record software systems (Epic, NextGen, etc.) and patient charting.

Physical Demands
  • While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; use hands to finger, handle, or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee is frequently required to walk and occasionally is required to operate a motor vehicle; stand, stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 25 pounds.

  • Work is generally performed in an office setting with a moderate noise level.
